ISSN 0952-8229 Abstract This article describes the significant developments in Cuba's mental health care since Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution, with a focus on community services and research initiatives in Havana. It is noted that Cuba has been put under tremendous pressure since 1992, declared by the government as a "Special Period," with the reduction of favorable trading links with the former Soviet Union and the intensification of US sanctions. Although there has been limited opportunity for growth in the health sector in recent years, Cuba is justifiably proud that not one day care center, school, or hospital has been closed during the "Special Period." It is suggested that Cuba has suffered for too long from academic isolation, but this has not diminished the people's ability to make use of their own intellectual resources, often to remarkably good effect. Neither has it weakened their resolve to use their resources in the fairest way possible for the benefit of all members of society. ISSN 0160-4341 Abstract Describes and evaluates the situation of the Cuban family and Cuban women during the colonial and republican periods. The article focuses on those internal processes within Cuban society which gave shape and form to the family and prescribed the roles to be played by women (and men) in both the society at large and in the family. The author examines the impact of the 1959 revolution on the traditional family structure and the new challenges for women in the building of a socialist society. The final section of the article addresses some of the theoretical issues involved in the debate over socialism and feminism, and the extent to which the Cuban experience can contribute to a fuller understanding of those issues. ISSN 0277-9536 Abstract Examines the AIDS crisis from the perspectives of critical and feminist medical anthropology, discussing what an appropriate public response to the AIDS epidemic might be and on what grounds the global AIDS epidemic was responded to as a unique case of public health catastrophe. Focusing on Brazil, areas addressed include (1) AIDS, the state, and individual rights; (2) AIDS and sexual citizenship; (3) AIDS, sexuality, and the Brazilian social image; (4) women; (5) street kids; (6) transvestites; and (7) AIDS discourse and activism. The Cuban AIDS experience is also considered, including the social body in Cuba, the Cuban AIDS program, and AIDS sanatoriums. The recovery of personal space and privacy and of a discourse on the social body are seen as missing links in contemporary discourse on AIDS. Marvin Leiner analyzes the practice of quarantine in the context of the Cuban Revolution. He also focuses on efforts by Cuban educators to introduce sex education in the schools and to change sexist and homophobic attitudes, discussing their successes and failures . . . and examining the explicit and implicit linkages between machismo and homophobia. Drawing on interviews, diaries, and techniques of participant observation, Dr. Leiner shows how the HIV sanitorium and earlier oppressive treatment of gays and lesbians serve as a barometer for contemporary Cuban society. Title Designing a humanitarian culture: An analysis of the Cuban experiment. Source Behavior & Social Issues. Vol 2(2), Fal-Win 1992, 99-118. ISSN 1064-9506 Abstract Analyzes the Cuban government's attempt to develop the ultimate humanitarian society, to keep sight of the well-being of humanity as their ultimate goal, and to arrange cultural contingencies that generate behavior compatible with that goal. It is argued that (1) such a humanitarian society will not evolve randomly without the intervention of cultural designers and (2) natural contingencies often generate behavior incompatible with the well-being of humanity, so the development of a humanitarian society requires the design and implementation of performance-management contingencies. Also, a society geared to the well-being of humanity must not be confused with a society free of aversive control. Finally, to use money as an incentive in addition to moral incentives does not necessarily counteract the development of a humanitarian society; the important issue is the contingent relationship between performance and incentives. ISBN 1-56000-020-1 (hardcover); 1-56000-585-8 (paperback) Abstract (from the publicity materials) This 220-page book documents and analyzes twenty-nine cases of psychiatric abuse of Cuban political dissidents. The dissidents were interned in Cuban psychiatric hospitals for a variety of political offenses, such as attempts of illegal exit and distributing enemy propaganda and were subjected to electroshocks and/or psychotropic drug treatments. Some dissidents were diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic, others were diagnosed as apathetic to socialism and still others were diagnosed as sane and yet were forcibly subjected to electroconvulsive and drug therapies. The book identifies the hospitals where the abuse took place, including the Havana Psychiatric Hospital, and the individual doctors responsible. It concludes that the evidence points to a pattern of systematic abuse of dissidents during the process of interrogation or as punishment for anti-government political behavior while in prison. This political abuse of psychiatry was managed by the Cuban State Security agencies, which are in control of the forensic wards at the psychiatric hospitals. The book includes an introduction by Vladimir Bukovsky contrasting Soviet and Cuban misuse of psychiatry for political purposes. ISSN 0887-0446 Abstract Conducted a 2.5-mo field study of health psychology in Cuba. Health psychology is an integrated part of the health system, both on an administrative and practical level. Cuba has developed a role for psychologists within the health field that has adapted to its situation as a poor and socialistic country. Priority is given to preventive and community-based psychology within primary health care facilities. Psychologists in primary health care serve a composite client group, with high priority given to pregnant women and to children. Psychologists deal with physical and mental health problems and focus on individuals as biopsychosocial units. Their responsibilities include health promotion, disease prevention, consultation and treatment, rehabilitation, research, and education. Psychiatric cases represented 4.8%; orthopedic and neurological care were the most requested (14.6% and 10.2%, respectively). In spite of the complexity of diagnosis of the examined cases, only 26% were rejected, although 73.3% of dermatological and 52.7% of physical medicine and rehabilitation cases were refused. The most accepted psychiatric cases were alcoholism and schizophrenia, while the most rejected psychiatric categories were mental retardation, epilepsy, and paranoia. Mehrabian (1968), designed to measure psychological distance and positive or negative affect from nonobvious aspects of verbal discourse, to references made by Castro concerning Guevara before and after the latter's departure. The scores indicate a significant increase in Castro's negativity and distance toward Guevara across the 2 time periods. It appears that Guevara's leaving was associated with a decline in Castro's feelings of personal warmth toward him, although this was consistently denied in the overt content of relevant statements. Abstract Studied the evaluations performed by forensic psychiatrists on defendants in Cuban courts of law during the period April 1982^December 1983 to establish their competence to stand trial, or lack thereof, for offenses ranging from robbery to murder and attempts at political assassination. The author emphasizes the importance of psychiatric evaluations of defendants in a socialist country, where attitudes toward crime are uncompromising once culpability is clearly established. Psychiatric evaluations are correlated with psychopathology diagnoses and crimes perpetrated by the defendants. Results include predominance of male offenders, unemployed Ss, urban residents, and poorly educated Ss (elementary level only). The majority of defendants found incompetent to stand trial were diagnosed as schizophrenics; Ss with diagnoses of mild mental retardation accounted for 24.2% of defendants accorded extenuating circumstances. The present author takes issue with their methods, asking whether Arguelles and Rich have not unconsciously imposed a North American understanding on the situation. It is suggested that to move forward in a scholarly dialog on Cuban homosexuality, a richer understanding of Latin folk categories of sexuality and knowledge of the nature of revolutionary and socialist culture are needed. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Explores the role of community health psychologists in Cuba and identifies 5 areas of activity: educational interventions, counseling and psychotherapy, evaluation and consultation, training of health personnel, and research. Psychologists work within a highly organized system of health care in addition to schools and workplaces. An essential factor in the success of the psychologist's work within the Cuban system of health care is the development and training of the psychometric technician. The preventive role of psychologists is emphasized. A basic condition for the independent development of psychology in Cuba has been the institutional support received at a national level. Future directions for theoretical development, empirical validation, and implementation of psychotherapeutic techniques are discussed. Title Psychology in the rehabilitation of the chronic mental patient. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 155-161. These include the patient, his/her learning capacity, interests, fitness for the job, characteristics and requirements of the job, and the rehabilitation process itself. The psychological techniques used and the procedure followed for initial assessment, job placement, and longitudinal assessment of the patient are also presented. The different groups of activities and levels of rehabilitation used at the Psychiatric Hospital of Habana and some statistics on mental patients' activities in Cuba are discussed. It is concluded that the evolution of the rehabilitation process can be seen through the concrete behaviors of the patient during occupational therapy. The performance of a socially useful activity contributes to the patient's socialization back into the community. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Reviews the literature on community psychology in Cuba published between 1976 and 1982 in the Journal of the Psychiatric Hospital of Habana and limited other sources. The review indicates that much research in community psychology is being carried out in Cuba. The review covers social issues, such as drug and alcohol use, aging, education, traffic problems, adolescence, and juvenile delinquency. In the health area, the extensive work published on psychosocial factors in disease, and the physician^patient relationship is reviewed, as well as some work done on health services evaluation. In the mental health area, researchers have explored psychosocial aspects of mental illness and emphasized therapeutic communities and psychoballet. It is concluded that research in community psychology has focused more on problems than solutions, although this is less true of the mental health area than that of social issues. The health status of the population has been transformed from that of a developing country to that approximating the developed countries. The delivery of primary care at the community level has evolved over the past 15 yrs as a result of critical evaluations of the new implementations. The community polyclinic has been the basis for all health planning since 1975. This model has the health of the community as its main concern and the mechanism for involving the community in health care decisions has been established. The history of the community polyclinic and the evolution of the guidelines by which it functions are reviewed. It is concluded that in practice, many problems persist, and the strategy for resolution of current conflicts will provide for interesting developments in the future. Title The Puerto Rican and Cuban public health systems: A comparison. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 204-221. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Examines the Puerto Rican and Cuban public health and mental health systems and their respective health profiles, emphasizing the role of psychosocial stressors. Data are derived from official government documents, scientific literature, newspaper articles, and discussions with Puerto Rican and Cuban health personnel. The Cuban health system was found to be better organized and more capable of providing equitable health care and encouraging community participation in health care delivery. However, the Puerto Rican public health system is in crisis and in the process of turning over the administration of its facilities to the private medical sector. Although both countries share health profiles similar to those of developed nations, differences in morbidity and mortality patterns, and the seemingly epidemic incidence of mental disorders in Puerto Rico suggest dissimilarities between their respective psychosocial stressors. Differences in the quality of public health care and in the health profiles seem mostly attributable to the divergent political and economic organization and priorities of both countries. Title Psychology and human services in Cuba: Personal perspectives. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 105-116. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Derives descriptive data on the development and practice of psychology and related human services in Cuba from interviews held at a medical school, at a local community health clinic, at a residential treatment facility and at 1 of the 2 universities in Cuba offering a degree program in psychology. The interviews revealed a network of interrelationships between: (1) work performance and a complex material and moral incentive system, where the workers played an active role in evaluating and modulating the system; (2) the health delivery system and its targeted community members, where services are adapted to the needs of the community; and (3) individuals and their neighborhoods, where local organizations are the mechanisms for community participation. It is concluded that a prime characteristic of Cuban society is to change the very nature of the relationships between people and their social institutions. Contextual and developmental considerations. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 162-172. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Presents the 1st part of a 2-part literature review of psychiatric social epidemiology in Cuba that focuses on contextual and developmental issues. The present author first lays the groundwork for the analysis of psychiatric social epidemiology by (1) drawing in broad strokes the developmental phases followed by the Cuban Revolution, as the contextual base on which to build this analysis; (2) exploring the development of the field of psychiatric epidemiology in the island; (3) delineating the development of human and material resources in health and mental health; (4) reviewing issues of access to care by traditionally underserved populations; (5) exploring gradual changes in the character of mental health care as reflected by service utilization patterns; and (6) discussing changes in the attitude of the population toward mental health and illness, as reflected by pathways to care. It is concluded that this review provides evidence of a rapid development and deployment of resources in this domain and of their egalitarian distribution and general accessibility to the population. Issues in morbidity and mortality. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 173-193. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract In the 2nd part of a 2-part review, the present author explores social epidemiological issues in the morbidity of psychiatric dysfunction and in the mortality associated with socioenvironmental stress in Cuba. This 2nd article builds on a review (see PA, Vol 73:6927) of the contribution of factors such as social status and social integration or marginality in a revolutionary society. The epidemiology of heart disease, cirrhosis of the liver, accidents, homicide, and suicide mortality are explored. A pattern of increasing epidemiological costs appears to be the result of the island's process of social and economic development. These costs are contrasted to marked benefits in several domains, which appear to respond to economic democracy, and to effective planning and policy development. Further study of the epidemiology of suicide is recommended. (79 ref) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) <74> Accession Number Journal Article: 1986-06254-001. Author Kenworthy, Eldon. Source Journal of Community Psychology. Vol 13(2), Apr 1985, 222-235. ISSN 0090-4392 Abstract Discusses the history of psychology in Cuba and some of the sociohistorical and political forces impacting on the development of psychology. Three periods are identified: the colonial (1492-2898), the prerevolutionary (1898-2958), and the revolutionary (1959^present). Each period represents a major shift in the socioeconomic and political context shaping the development of psychology. Key figures from each period are described in their historical context. Emphasis is given to foci and organizational growth of psychology during the revolutionary period. It is concluded that psychology in Cuba is a pragmatic, action-oriented discipline that focuses on social and community needs in health and education. While historically influenced by the North American and Soviet models, Cuba has reached beyond both to produce a psychology rooted in contemporary Cuban sociocultural reality. Ss' medical history and work attendance data were obtained from company records. Company policy allows workers to consume alcoholic beverages at any time during the workday. 81% of the Ss reported drinking during the workday, and there was a positive correlation between number of years working in the brewery and the number of bottles of beer drunk daily. Most workers started drinking during the 2nd half of the workday, and consumed 1-6 bottles of beer per day. No relationship between drinking behavior and health status was established. An indirect variation of the attitude research method developed by the Faculty of Psychology of the Central University of Villa Clara, Cuba, was employed in a series of studies. Ss were recruited from various schools. Each S was presented with 16 typical social situations, with different roles modeled in each situation. The S's task was to rank order the role models in terms of his/her identification with the role models. The 16 social situations yield 4 measures each of work attitudes, study attitudes, social attitudes, and attitudes toward group and/or personal property. The discriminative capacity, reliability, and validity of the methods were investigated, and the utility of the method was confirmed. ISSN 0253-5742 Abstract Investigated the psychosocial environment in homes of 18 adolescent mothers (younger than 18 yrs old) who gave birth in the Chiqui Gomez Policlinic, Santa Clara, Cuba, during 1982. Of the 655 live births at that facility during 1982, 90 of the mothers were under the age of 18 yrs. The 18 Ss studied represent a simple random sample of the 90 adolescent mothers. The Ss' homes were visited by members of a multidisciplinary team (consisting of a psychologist, pediatrician, gynecologist-obstetrician, and internist), and the psychosocial environment was assessed via direct observation and analysis of interview data. Results indicate that the Ss frequently ended their formal education during pregnancy and they neither attended school nor sought employment after the birth of the child. These Ss appeared to be cut off from their age peers. The Ss frequently delegated childrearing responsibilities to grandmothers and relatives, who became surrogate parents. The Ss generally accepted maternity passively, without outward concern for their lack of financial or emotional independence. A probabilistic sample of 3,093 Ss (9.5% of the total population 16 yrs of age and older) was interviewed regarding use of addictive substances. More males than females used these substances. 33 and 32.3% of tobacco and coffee users, respectively, reported experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they stopped using these substances. 2.43% of alcohol users and 1.7% of the probabilistic sample were found to be abusing alcohol; these figures are much lower than those reported in other countries. It is recommended that addictive habits in other health districts be examined and that the risks of excessive tobacco, coffee, and alcohol use be emphasized in health education programs. Abstract Investigated psychiatric morbidity and service utilization via structured interviews with a probability sample of households in a health catchment area in Havana, Cuba. Data concerning 3,093 household members 16 yrs old or older were obtained via 901 structured interviews. In addition to service utilization data, information was obtained concerning alcohol and drug consumption, demographic factors, and psychiatric diagnoses received. Approximately 3.5% of the sample had received previous psychiatric assistance from physicians, psychiatrists, or psychiatric institutions. Females had somewhat higher utilization rates than did males. The incidence of alcoholism was lower than that reported in epidemiologic studies in other countries. Diazepam was the most commonly used psychiatric drug. However, diazepam use was considerably lower than that reported in a 1972 Cuban epidemiologic study. The need for alcohol education and crisis intervention services is emphasized. In 1979, 1,332 Ss were interviewed, while in 1980 there were 1,213 applicants. There were no differences in the ages, marital status, number of children, number of previous abortions or miscarriages, or contraceptive usage between these 2 samples. However, there was a difference in the reasons for seeking the abortion. In 1979, type of housing was less common as a given reason, while family reasons and interference with schooling were more common. The typical S seeking an abortion was between the ages of 21 and 30 yrs and was married or cohabiting. Use of birth control increased with the age of the S, and family reasons for the abortions were more important for the older women. Original Title Algunos factores sociales que intervienen en la regulacion de la fecundidad. Estudio preliminar. Provincia Granma. Source Temas de Trabajo Social. Vol 4(1), Jan-Jun 1982, 59-66. Abstract Since the Cuban revolution, numerous contraceptive methods have become available that have put an end to the exclusive use of abortion. In Granma province, the 1979 birth rate was 18.5 per 1,000, as compared to a national average of 14.7 per 1000. To learn about knowledge of contraception, most common methods used, and social factors in pregnancy, a sample of 120 women completed a questionnaire. The most common age of respondents was 21-30 yrs (46.6%), and 48.3% of the sample had only completed elementary school. The majority (60.8%) were housewives. 53 Ss (44.2%) had used abortion as a method of birth control, but the most common method was the intrauterine device (77.5%). The most common reason given for obtaining an abortion was interference of the pregnancy in the S's regular routine (25%), while 24.2% said they had as many children as they wanted. It is recommended that sex education of youth be improved, as well as that for the general public and for educators. Title Terapia conductual y rehabilitacion en psiquiatria. / Behavior therapy and rehabilitation in psychiatry. Source Revista del Hospital Psiquiatrico de la Habana. Vol 23(3), Jul-Sep 1982, 353-367. Abstract Asserts that behavior modification therapy (BMT) is a whole that consists of methodological principles and techniques that modify undesirable behavior. BMT is derived from general learning theory and clinical experimentation. The concept of BMT is currently approaching what is scientifically and empirically correct, integrating the affective and cognitive into the notion of behavior. It is argued that it is also necessary to integrate the concept of conscience as a determinant of behavior, a possibility that has been avoided by occidental contemporary psychologists and behaviorists. The present BMT models are unlike the original concepts of behaviorism. BMT can be applied to many goals in changing or resolving undesirable behaviors. In the macrosocial sphere, some actual behavioral ecologies and technologies are extensions of BMT goals. The methodological principles and concrete procedures of BMT apply to actual rehabilitation models and also, in a general way, to the whole sociomedical field. A linguistically modified version of the MMPI was administered to 2 groups of Ss, one group with high verbal comprehension and the other with low, to address these problems. Findings show high testetest reliability. Using an additional 80 Ss, inconsistencies in 12 MMPI questions were determined to be due to sociocultural differences. Title Santeria: A magico-religious system of Afro-Cuban origin. Source American Journal of Social Psychiatry. Vol 2(3), Sum 1982, 32-38. ISSN 0277-8173 Abstract Describes the historical, psychocultural, and forensic aspects of Santeria, a religious cult of African origin. Santeria is a blend of African religion and Christianity. It consists of rituals that form a continuum from simple rites to complex ceremonials with anticipated verbal and gestural magico-religious behavior. The rituals consist of symbolic nonverbal behavior, possession states, glossolalia, and therapeutics (magical healing). A hallmark of this religion is the depiction of African deities as facsimiles of Christian saints, an acculturative process of the African slaves known as syncretism. The religion is popular among Latins in general and Cubans in particular and is now widely practiced by the Cuban-American population of South Florida. With the immigrant Cuban population, Santeria has become pivotal as a functional strategy of conflict resolution at both individual and interpersonal levels. The system provides symbolic rituals that lead to intrapsychic and social stability and allow the expression of various personality traits. The control group consisted of 22 students matched for sex, age, grade, and academic performance. The experiment lasted 6 mo and consisted of multiple activities once or twice a week, including narrations, plays, meetings with significant people, games, and drawing. Intragroup and intergroup quantitative analyses indicated significantly more highly developed attitudes in the experimental group than in control Ss. The experimental group demonstrated a more humanistic style of interpersonal communication, more generosity and cooperation, greater responsibility, more significant relationships with individuals and groups, and greater interest in surroundings and relationships with country and the world. The effectiveness of formative methods is emphasized. (English abstract) (8 ref) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) <122> Accession Number Journal Article: 1987-03713-001. Adolescence is a difficult period marked by accelerated physical and sexual development. Menstruation and spermatogenesis begin to occur, and secondary sexual characteristics appear. Sexual relations between adolescents are considered premature because the individuals involved are not yet psychologically and emotionally mature or able to bear full responsibility for their actions. Problems related to adolescent sexuality that are occurring with increasing frequency in Cuba include teenage pregnancy, abortions, and marriages and the emotional, financial, and psychosocial difficulties that ensue. Sex education in the schools needs to be improved and made more widely available. Abstract 14 children living in a home for the physically handicapped were compared with 14 similar children living at home; all Ss were 12-24 yrs old. Pre-assessment showed that none of the children were receiving regular physical therapy; recreational assistance; social help; or pediatric, psychological, orthopedic, or health care; at the postassessment, the institutionalized Ss were all receiving direct systematic help while there was no change for the children who remained at home. It is recommended that (a) a more detailed study be done of the function of the social workers with respect to their reports of improvements in patients with physical and mental handicaps; (b) for those children who cannot be institutionalized, a social worker be available for them, regular meetings be held with their parents, and municipal clinics be provided; and (c) funding be increased for homes for the physically handicapped. Abstract Homes have been created since the Cuban revolution for mentally retarded children and adolescents with or without physical disabilities. Within these homes, the role of the social worker includes membership on the administrative team, preparing and supervising case files, keeping close contact with boarders' families and friends, completing the case file after a child has returned home or moved to another facility, helping to coordinate social activities, filing monthly reports to the technical sub-director of the home, serving on a committee to optimize the home's services, promoting social improvements, participating in the evaluation of prospective boarders, and participating in meetings with parents. It is recommended that material on homes for the mentally and physically handicapped be included in the courses of study for social workers. ISSN 0022-3514 Abstract Reasoned that the Castro government in Cuba represents an important negative reference group for Cuban Americans in the US. Exp I asked 43 Cuban-American undergraduates to give their opinions on issues surrounding the liberalization of relations between Cuba and the US. As expected, opinions were more opposed to such liberalization when an ostensible representative of the Castro government was quoted as favoring it than when no mention was made of the Castro government. Exps II and III (137 Ss) tested the prediction that utilization of negative reference groups would be mediated by dispositional self-consciousness. In Exp II, Ss gave their opinions after favorable opinions had been attributed to officials of the Castro government. Opposition among these Ss was positively correlated with their public self-consciousness but was unrelated to private self-consciousness. Exp III replicated the effect of public self-consciousness when the reference group was salient but yielded an ambiguous effect for an experimental manipulation of self-focus. Findings appear to confirm the role of dispositional self-consciousness in reference-group behavior. Moreover, they appear to suggest that Ss used their opposition to the negative reference group for self-presentational purposes rather than for self-definitional purposes. Title Inadequate family situations: Frequency over two years. [Spanish]. Original Title Situaciones familiares inadecuadas. Frecuencia en dos anos. Source Temas de Trabajo Social. Vol 2(2-3), May-Dec 1980, 13-19. Abstract Although the educational level and mass media have improved since the Cuban Revolution, the family is still the primary means of social and cultural education. However, some families persist in "errors," which prevent their children's normal entry into the socialist society, including inconsistency of reward and punishment, permissiveness, overprotection, rejection, and isolation. To assess the frequency of these errors, 743 clients of an infant and adolescent mental health team were diagnosed and the results tabulated. 69% were from families that were rated as inadequate; of these, 47.1% were inconsistent, 21.8% permissive, 16.6% overprotective, and the remainder rejecting or isolating. Of those children with behavior problems, 88.5% were from inadequate families, with 50.4% of nonpsychotic organic origin, 84.8% of neurosis, 57.4% of mental retardation, and 100% of social maladjustment. Epidemiological research is needed with respect to inadequate family situations and their relation to psychiatric diagnoses. Characteristics included the youths' needs for independence, self-affirmation, social acceptance, simultaneous rejection of norms of family and society and need for their support, instability in behavior and mood, need to love and be loved, and preoccupation with and curiosity about sex. Parents of adolescents must set an example, show affection, provide emotional stability, help adolescents cope with social situations, avoid emotional scenes, and exert affectionate and meaningful discipline. These guidelines are provided because in prerevolutionary Cuba only moneyed youths had an adolescence, while now all children experience this stage of development. Since people avoid contact with things they dislike, there is little chance of changing this attitude directly, and indirect methods such as publicity and neighborhood theater will have to be used. Psychological testing should be done to determine the most effective approaches. ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) <134> Accession Number Journal Article: 1980-29034-001. Author Calvo Montalvo, Nereida. Title Why are we making a thesaurus? [Spanish]. Source Boletin de Psicologia. No 1, 1978, 13-17. ISSN 0006-5943 Abstract Discusses the present state of psychology's technical vocabulary, and the contributions that a proposed thesaurus of psychological terms could make to remedy the situation. Scientific work depends considerably on the precision of the language that it uses. The growth of psychology has been obstructed by the multiplicity of hostile philosophical schools, currents, and viewpoints that have evolved. These diverse schools do not have a common language with which to communicate. This deficiency is especially deplorable, since the object of psychological study is the individual. In 1975, work was begun on the First Cuban Glossary of Psychological Terms. It is argued, however, that rather than glossaries and dictionaries, what is really needed is a thesaurus that would set precise definitions for technical terms. An authoritative work of this kind would help to standardize terminology. ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) <135> Accession Number Journal Article: 1980-05271-001. Author Portes, Alejandro; McLeod, Samuel A; Parker, Robert N. Title Immigrant aspirations. Source Sociology of Education. Vol 51(4), Oct 1978, 241-260. ISSN 0038-0407 Abstract Examined the nature and determinants of occupational, income, and educational aspirations among recent Mexican and Cuban immigrants to the US. Results support the hypothesis that aspirations are set through a rational assessment of past attainments and skills. Canonical results suggest a common causal process for all 3 status aspirations in both the immigrant and a US-labor-force control sample. Title The Social Readjustment Rating Questionnaire: A study of Cuban exiles. Source Journal of Psychosomatic Research. Vol 20(3), 1976, 231-236. ISSN 0022-3999 Abstract Administered a revised form of T. H. Holmes and R. H. Rahe's Social Readjustment Rating Scale to 117 Cuban exiles living in the US (Texas). Cross-cultural comparisons were made with Holmes and Rahe's standardization sample of middle- and lower-class Americans. Areas of stress in cultural readjustment to the US are discussed based on the rating results. Overall data show that a separation from the homeland and family and cultural differences in family patterns were judged to be the most difficult life changes in terms of readjustment. ISSN 0047-2328 Abstract Analyzes the latent consequences of presumption of equality under communist ideology for the achievement of such equality by women. A set of data is presented which documents the contention that despite ideological claims, equality at certain levels of the bureaucracy has not been achieved and seems to be dependent upon changes in the cultural belief system of the Cubans regarding appropriate sex-role differences. Source Ceskoslovenska Psychiatrie. Vol 71(2-3), Jun 1975, 184-188. Abstract Describes the training of psychiatrists and the system of psychiatric care in today's Cuba. Prevention and social psychiatry are emphasized. At present, geriatric problems do not exist and alcoholism and drug addiction are rare, but the suicide rate has been growing. Cuban psychiatrists are primarily oriented to American psychiatric philosophy and treatment patterns, but also have good contacts with Spain and the socialist countries. The author states that before he visited Cuba in 1974, he had underestimated the quality of Cuban psychiatry. Title Vocational and school guidance in Cuba. [French]. Source Orientation Scolaire et Professionnelle. No 3, Jul-Sep 1974, 225-241. ISSN 0249-6739 Abstract Discusses the effects on schools in Cuba caused by transition from the capitalist system to a socialist society. Traditional schools inherited from the past coexist with those based on an entirely new concept: the principle of unifying the acquisition of knowledge and productive work. It is noted that the problems inherent in the traditional school, particularly the differences between the professional ambitions of the younger generation and the needs of the economy, have been tackled by short term measures such as mass media propaganda and specialized technical study groups. However, the Cubans are convinced that only a complete restructuring of the educational system can really solve these problems. Thus with the transformations of Cuban society new forms of education are emerging, such as schools in the field and university faculties in industries, to combine study and production.
